Down syndrome, or trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome. The additional genetic material changes the course of development causing the physical, cognitive and behavioral characteristics associated with Down syndrome. It is the most common of all genetic disorders and affects 1 in every 733 live births.
Individuals with Down syndrome are at higher risk for certain physical problems, such as heart defects, hearing problems, thyroid conditions and Alzheimer’s disease. Several of these conditions, thanks to research, are now treatable, allowing individuals with Down syndrome to live healthy lives. The life expectancy has increased dramatically over the last 25 years, from 25 in 1983 to 60 today.
The focus of clinical research continues to be on developing effective medications that will allow for improving both the individual’s health and their enjoyment of life.
Summit Research Network occasionally participates in research studies for Down syndrome. If you would like more information about Down syndrome studies please call us at (206) 292-CARE (2273) or fill out the form below and we will contact you.
